Scientific and technological innovation promotes urban carbon neutrality Side-event at the STI Forum 2023

I. Context
Since 2016, the Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum), convened by the UNECOSOC and organized by the United Nations Interagency Task Force on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (IATT) and a 10-member Group, has been held annually at the UN Headquarters in New York. It is a key part of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM). The STI Forum will facilitate discussions on cooperation in science, technology, and innovation in support of the SDGs in accordance with current mandates and as in past years. Therefore, this forum will bring together leading experts and academics in the field of sustainable development, with a  focusing on the role of scientific and technological innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also report its research results to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) on an annual basis.

 

This year, the eighth annual Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum), convened by the President of ECOSOC Her Excellency Lachezara Stoeva who has appointed two co-chairs - H.E. Ms. Mathu Joyini, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations and H.E. Mr. Thomas Woodroffe, United Kingdom Ambassador to the UN Economic and Social Council, will be held from 3 to 4 May 2023. This year's STI Forum will focus on SDG6(clean water and sanitation), SDG7(affordable and clean energy), SDG9(industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG11(sustainable cities and communities), SDG17(partnerships for the goals).

 

The forum will provide a platform for stakeholders from governments, international organizations, enterprises, colleges and universities, NGOs, etc. to share successful experiences and identify existing issues in sustainable development. To better advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development from city’s level, and give full play the role of multi-partners in promoting urban carbon neutrality through scientific and technological innovation.The Scientific and technological innovation promotes urban carbon neutrality is planning to be held by SISD, which will be a side event on the STI Forum 2023. II. Objective

The theme for the STI Forum 2023 will be: Science, technology and innovation for accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”. The main objective of the Session will closely be closely aligned with that and will have an exclusive focus on the role and contributions of science, technology and innovation. The Session hopes will provide a platform to:

Research on the collaborative innovation application of industry-university-research

Explore the role of technological innovation in promoting sustainable urban development

Analyze the innovative models of the latest sustainable development cases and explore how to promote the achievement of regional dual carbon goals through continuous cooperation

III. Format, time and venue

As one of the side events of the STI Forum 2023, the session that theme is Scientific and technological innovation promotes urban carbon neutrality will be organized virtually on Thursday, May 4 2023, from Beijing time 8:30-9:45p.m.(8:30-9:45a.m. NY time)in Shenzhen, China by ZOOM.

The session will also extend its internal nature of general principle of collaboration and multi-stakeholder, including United Nations entities, civil society and NGOs, private sector, philanthropic sector, scientific community, academia, youth, indigenous peoples and other stakeholder groups. It is important to secure participation from the broad range of communities among S&T field and sustainable development realm.
